Streets ~**~ Calles

How many times I have been scared of riding on the streets!
Santa Barbara is a pretty fun and safe place to ride but often I felt that I was missing some basic bike handling skills and more knowledge about how ride safely. So, I checked the Santa Barbara Bike Coalition web and enrolled in their Street Skills class. It was great! I learned so much and my riding now will be more fun and of course safer! Totally recommend it to everyone, the teachers are very nice, the materials are helpful, there is a bike ride and you get a certificate at the end...by the way, I only missed two questions in the quiz...

Saint Patrick's Day~**~ Dia de San Patricio

After volunteering this morning at the Public Library, I glided down State Street towards the beach. It was still early in the morning and there was not too much activity yet...but every place seemed to be ready for the celebrations of the day. I couldn't resit not taking a photo of this green bike parked nearby the Leprechaun.
Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

Treasures ~**~ Tesoros

You never know the treasures you’ll find at the thrift store and since I have more free time now, I have been visiting my favorite ones frequently. I love being able to find cool vintage items on a budget, plus I know I’m supporting a non-profit that works for a good cause. My latest find: 1883 Lucchese cowboy boots. I absolutely adore them! They are so comfy, and to my surprise they are good for riding.

Me encantan!

Coffee with bikes, please!
I love spending a warm afternoon at the French Press! It’s almost Spring and an iced vanilla latte after biking around town is just simply delicious! The back patio is perfect to seat down to relax watching people go by and sip the wonderful Verve.

Nostalgia

Yesterday I jumped on La Pajarita and headed downtown in a nostalgic search of the places that no longer are, and somehow, I ended up at one of my favorite spots: Jimmy’s Cocktail Lounge. Jimmy’s was in my opinion the best place to get a cocktail after work. How many memories! I long their homemade Chinese food and I almost can taste in my memory their big egg roll! Oh Jimmy’s, I do miss you!

The building is a historical site as it is located in the heart old China town in Santa Barbara. Jimmy’s closed a few years and I know I’m not the only one that longs for the good old days of Mai Tais and Sinatra!

Obserbations~**~ Observaciones

1. I haven’t put gas in my car for a month!

2. Since I started to run all my errands using my bike as my means of transportation I have started to pay attention to things around me: the street, the cars, the trees and plants, the shops, the people, and the road. I found this cute little garden. I see things now that I had not noticed before and it seems that everything slows down, it feels like if thing was in slow motion.

3. Everyday I notice more people riding bikes in this town. It seems to me that in the college and university areas there are tons of students on bikes, but downtown there are two predominant types of cyclists: the lycra/spandex speed racers and the Latino workers who use their bikes as their commute to work. I feel closer to the later type, they are always friendly to me, they say hola, and smile when they see me with my old bike and my pink helmet.

4. I don’t care much for poor drivers in expensive cars, yesterday I was almost got run over by an angry looking guy who was driving a Jaguar. Somehow he missed me, even though I was turning right in front of him and I had signaled with my arm the direction of my turn. Of course all this happened the middle of the afternoon with plenty of day light! He even had the nerve to yell at me when I moved to the right to avoid being hit!

San Diego

Visiting San Diego for the weekend and got to visit a great little bikeshop: Ye Olde Bike Place. The truth is that I don't have lots of experience with bikeshops, when I feel brave enough to venture into one I usually walk in scared, feeling inadequate, and not sure how to even get help. However, this shop made me feel different. The owners are friendly, helpful, and have no snob bike attitude. They could not help me with what I needed, but they surely tried, gave me advice and made recommendations.

We had heavy rains on Friday and Saturday, which makes biking difficult for me, but allows me for more time to play with my sweet little kitty. Lately, she is very active in the mornings and I think she likes to have me around.

As soon as the rain cleared out, I went to the beach to check out the big waves. Being able to bike to the beach is another of the great pleasures I have discovered during this unemployment period.

Sunday morning made a beautiful time for a ride to Sharks beach. Biking in the morning after a rainy day is a real treat. I like to observe everyday objects while pedaling. The morning light seems to illuminate everything and it makes everything seem clean and shinny; the grass looks greener and the sky seems bluer.
