"Get a bicycle. You will not regret it if you live." ~Mark Twain

My first bike love, her name is Buenaventura!, a 1971 Fair Lady Sting Ray. I'm still learning but without this beautiful bike I wouldn't be writing this blog and for sure I wouldn't be enjoying the long sunny rides. Today I rode to Montecito to meet a friend, we went hiking and then eat cupcakes.

Austin

“The use of traveling is to regulate imagination by reality, and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are.” –Samuel Johnson

Even though I had lived in the USA for almost 13 years, it was last weekend the first time I got to experience the “Texan spirit” by visiting Austin.

I had always since my childhood wanted to visit Texas. Like many children of my generation I grew up in Spain watching Westerns with my dad and since then I have developed a love affair with cowboy boots.

I must say, it was one of my best trips and Austin exceeded my all expectations in every possible way. The people were friendly, not in a cheesy way but in a sincere warm way.

I loved its diverse food and music scene, and I really enjoyed walking around the town and learning about the rich local history and culture. I loved seeing the Texan lone start; they were every where in Austin! It was magical as well to see hundredths of bats at dusk fly into the night!

Austin seems also like a great town to bike around, I saw lots of single speed and fixies and I wished I had had my bike as well to cruise around town.

A nice bike related surprise is that I got to visit Mellow Johnny’s, Lance’s bike shop where I bought a bell for my bike that makes the sweetest ring.

Last weekend my group of friends decided to go on a evening ride and it was so much fun! It was a bike & beer ride, a pub crawl on bikes. Of course, I was scared because I'm a very inexperience rider, had never biked at night, plus beer was mixed into the equation. I wasn't scared, I was terrified during the whole week and entertained the idea of not going...I feared that riding in the evening might be harder, I thought there would be lots of traffic on a Saturday evening and at the end, I got on my bike and headed downtown with the group. And I was amazed at how much fun it was. I liked the cold wind heating my face, I loved seeing the moon, and I felt alive!

First Post / Primer Entrada

After thinking and thinking, I decided to start a blot to reflect on how I am filling my long days of unemployment. I have been out of work since October 31st, 2009 and I have spend a lot of the time with my "new" best friend: my 1965 Raleigh 3 Speed Space Rider. I never learned to ride a bike as a child, in fact, I'm now in my mid thirties and just learned to ride 6 months ago. And, I'm so glad I decided to give a try. I must say, it is pretty weird to be a grown-up while learning to balance....But now that I'm getting better I would not give it up for anything in the world. I love riding in the sun, riding without worries, without a sense of time or hurry. I guess that's the beauty of having a lot of free time...and living in beautiful Santa Barbara.
