DIY Backpack ~**~ Mochila casera

I have found that carrying a backpack is the easiest way for me to run errands in my bike and for a while I’ve keeping an eye at the beautiful handmade ric-a-rac bags. However, at the over $100 price tag, I can’t get myself to buy one, although I really want one; they are truly beautiful little pieces of art.

Anyhow, as I wanted to save a buck to live according to my unemployment means, and I needed a backpack, I decided to attempt to make my own using the ric-a-rac concept as a source of inspiration.

I had an old bag ready for beautification, --one of those cheesy messenger bags that are given away at conferences, and I also had lots of colorful thread from my cross needlepoint projects. The only thing I had to buy was some pretty fabrics and ribbons with interesting patterns. I only spent about $10!

I did saw everything by hand and it took longer than I had though, about 10 hours! My fingers hurt so much towards the end but it was such a fun project!

This is end result:

Getting ready to leave the house on Thursday afternoon.
I don't know what's older, my little vintage purse or my Pajarita from 1965?

The Pacific Ocean ~**~ El Océano Pacífico

It's been raining and it's cold in Santa Barbara, and I long for bike rides to the beach in a sunny afternoon.

Looking through some of my recent photos, I found this one that I took about two weeks ago. I went with La Pajarita to Arroyo Burro Beach and walked to up the bluffs in the Douglas Family Preserve...now looking at this pic I can only smile and think of these verses by the poet Arthur Rimbaud.

Elle est retrouvée.
Quoi? - L'Éternité.
C'est la mer allée
Avec le soleil.

It's found again!
-What? -Eternity.
It's the sun merging
With the sea.

Stop to smell the flowers! ~**~ Parate a oler las flores!

One of the benefits from being unemployed is that I literally have time to smell the flowers! The spot where I took this photo is in Modoc Street's bike lane. I use this bike route to get to the Foodbank where I volunteer twice a week.

My new light ~**~ Mi luz nueva

I'm so happy with my new light! It's chrome, LED run by batteries and it has a sensor that activates it when it's dark. It's so cool! I got it at the Bike Stand in Santa Barbara. I love going to Baron' store, he is friendly and knows so much about bicycles. It's always a wonderful learning experience!

Where I live there used to live also a cute little kitty named Pépe, that used to use my front porch as his exclusive littler box. Pépe was so sweet and cute that I let him get away with murder...My porch though always looked terrible... but it was fun to have him around! Unfortunately, a couple months ago, Pépe and his family moved out and since then my porch has been looking terribly sad!

When I got unemployed I made a list with many projects and goals that I wanted to tackle; bringing my front porch back to life was one of them. Yesterday, I went to a local nursery and I bought many little plants to bring color and happiness to the entrance to my home.
I sort of went nuts and bought a bunch of flowers: yellow Violas, red, pink and white Begonias, red Verbena, Golden Fleece, a cool Adiantum Cuneatum fern, and cala lilies. There are all so cute!

Now, I can't wait to see them grow and perfume my porch in the warm Santa Barbara Summer nights!

Grandfather and grandson ~**~ Abuelo y nieto

Walking on pier the other day I saw this grandfather and his grandson riding together and it reminded me about a film that I watched at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. I volunteered at the festival and had the chance to watch many films and my favorite one was the Bulgarian This World is Big and Salvation Lurks around the Corner. The film is about the struggle to forget and remember a difficult past and at the same time learning to enjoy the present. It’s about the importance of connecting with family and finding pleasure in riding your bicycle and playing backgammon. It is sweet, sad, and inspiring. The score is also great and the Festival Band performs the song Backgammon Dice. Definitely, this film is high on my list of best movies ever. Totally recommend it!
